Parliamentary Secretary François-Philippe Champagne Announces Investments in Skills and Training in Southwestern Ontario

April 5, 2016 – London, Ontario – Department of Finance

François-Philippe Champagne, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance, today met with members and volunteers of the Employment Sector Council of London-Middlesex to announce targeted investments in skills and training, as part of the Government’s first budget, Growing the Middle Class.

Parliamentary Secretary Champagne highlighted the Government’s historic plan to invest more than $120 billion in infrastructure over the next 10 years, investments that will create a more modern, cleaner economy, a more inclusive society, and a country better positioned to compete globally.

The Parliamentary Secretary noted that important investments would be made in Southwestern Ontario, in consultation with municipalities, the province, as well as other key stakeholders.

To give more Canadians greater access to good, well-paying jobs, Parliamentary Secretary Champagne announced that the Government will invest in training for unemployed and underemployed workers, and will develop a new framework to support union-based apprenticeship training. Specifically, Budget 2016 will enhance training and employment supports for unemployed and underemployed Canadians by investing a total of $175 million in 2016–17 in the Labour Market Development Agreements and the Canada Job Fund Agreements.

The Government will also support a strong and innovative automotive sector, with the extension of the Automotive Innovation Fund through to the end of 2020–21.

Growing the Middle Class is about revitalizing the economy and providing support for Canadian families and communities right across the country, including here in Southwestern Ontario. The Government of Canada is focused on building a more innovative and clean economy, and creating thriving communities for future generations.”
