Archived - Canada Congratulates International Monetary Fund’s New Managing Director

The Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance, today issued this statement following the selection of the new Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF):

“Canada wishes to congratulate Christine Lagarde on being selected Managing Director of the IMF.

“We have no doubt that Ms. Lagarde will do an excellent job in leading the Fund. Her extensive legal, economic and political experience will serve her well in her new responsibilities.

“We also thank Agustín Carstens for his strong candidacy. The IMF was fortunate to have had two highly credible and qualified candidates for the position.

“I look forward to working closely with Ms. Lagarde to build a strong and sustainable global economy.”
