The Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance, today congratulated Suzanne Hurtubise on her appointment as the new Director for Canada and Morocco at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

"Ms. Hurtubise has a proven track record of achievement throughout her civil service career, and I'm certain she will make a valuable contribution to the EBRD," said Minister Flaherty. "Throughout its history the EBRD has been pivotal in fostering the transition towards open, market-oriented economies in Central and Eastern Europe, and it will continue to play an influential role as the global economy recovers."

Suzanne Hurtubise has more than 30 years of experience with the federal government. Since 2006 she was Deputy Minister of Public Safety Canada. She previously held positions in many government departments including the Department of Finance Canada, the Privy Council Office and Industry Canada. She also served as Canada's Ambassador and Permanent Representative at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Minister Flaherty thanked André Juneau, who is retiring at the end of this month, for his valuable work representing Canada at the EBRD since 2006.

Originally established in 1991, the EBRD is the largest single investor in Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States. It provides project financing and mobilizes significant foreign direct investment in its countries of operations. Since its inception, the EBRD has invested over €41 billion in more than 2,500 projects.
