Tiff Macklem, Associate Deputy Minister

Tiff Macklem became Associate Deputy Minister of the Department of Finance on November 1, 2007. In addition to his other many duties, he also serves as Canada's Finance Deputy at the G-7, G-20, and the Financial Stability Board. He was appointed Chair of the Financial Stability Board's Standing Committee on Standards Implementation in June 2009.

Biographical Notes

Prior to his appointment as Associate Deputy Minister of Finance, Mr. Macklem was Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada where his responsibilities included analysis of international, economic and financial issues, and their relationship to monetary policy. As a member of the Bank's Governing Council and the Executive Management Committee, he shared responsibility for decisions with respect to monetary policy and the management of the business of the Bank.

In 1984, Mr. Macklem joined the Bank of Canada in the Department of Monetary and Financial Analysis for one year, and returned to the Bank in 1989 following the completion of his PhD.

On two occasions since 1993, he has had part-time appointments as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the universities he graduated from, as well as a one-year Executive Interchange in the Department of Finance. Mr. Macklem was appointed Assistant Chief of the Research Department in 1993, Research Adviser of that department in 1996, and Chief of the department in January 2000. He was appointed Adviser to the Governor in August 2003.

Born in Montréal, Quebec, Mr. Macklem graduated from Queen's University in 1983 with a bachelor's degree in economics, and completed a master's degree and a PhD in economics from the University of Western Ontario.
